It has just been announced that ‘The Bletherer’, from the forthcoming Stramash CD has won 1st prize in the instrumental category of the International Songwriting Competition. Over 15,500 entries were considered by a panel filled with an impressive array of judges including McCoy Tyner, John Scofield, Youssou N’Dour, Tom Waits, Chaka Khan and Robbie Williams(!) The tune ‘Farewell My Love’, also on the Stramash CD, received an honourable mention.
The Stramash CD is now officially released as of 13th July, and will be available to buy from this website, Amazon, iTunes and the remaining few retailers that still stock music.
I’ve immensely enjoyed spending February and March with Mike Maran and Robert Pettigrew, producing and touring a show about the life, music and drug taking of Chet Baker. ‘A Funny Valentine’ is written by storyteller Mike Maran and follows many of Chet’s escapades. Pianist Robert Pettigrew and I play onstage and we‘re given great scope to perform Chet’s music. Chet is probably my all time favourite trumpeter and it’s been a joy, trying to get right inside Chet’s music. It’s a great show; please check my gigs page for details. For anyone interested in Chet Baker, here are the CD recommendations I put in the programme.
I was very fortunate to play a duet gig with Dave in the beautiful surroundings of Roslin Chapel on 2nd April, Dave was on fire, the atmosphere was incredible and we’ve just been given a 5 star review from Kenny Mathieson in the Scotsman: ‘Steele’s lyrical trumpet work bristled with invention, by turns rich and warm or sharp-edged and plangent as the music demanded, while Milligan's constantly imaginitive pianism, rich in harmonic colour and rhythmic momentum beneath his melodic creations, again demonstrated what a fully developed player he is.'
